Jaco Environmental Inc. said it will open an appliance recycling plant Wednesday at 166 Thorn Hill Road, Marshall. The recycling operation has created 20 jobs -- 10 for collecting old appliances from customers and 10 for "demanufacturing" 95 percent of the components of each appliance, said Michael Dunham, Jaco's director of energy and environment. Jaco, based in Seattle, has collected about 10,500 old refrigerators and freezers from customers of three sponsoring utilities: Duquesne Light Co. of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Energy Inc. of Greensburg and FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron, Ohio. Utility customers who replace their refrigerators and freezers with energy efficient units can have old appliances picked up by Jaco crews and receive a $35 rebate for recycling. For information and to schedule a pickup, call 1-877-270-3521 or visit your utility's website.
