Everson property owners will not see an increase in local taxes in 2010.

Council this week approved a final budget with revenues and expenditures both at $149,050. Millage will remain at 4.0395.

"The borough will end 2009 in the black, but we're cutting it extremely close," said council President Mike Banaszak. "The first couple of months will be a little lean until the tax revenue comes in."

But things should be fine as long as each department keeps a close eye on spending.

Council also appointed Sonya King an auditor, replacing Bobbi Cramer who resigned due to health issues.

King is the daughter of Councilman Marty Adobato and was the only applicant for the position. Adobato abstained from the vote on the appointment.

Banaszak said the appointment was crucial because, besides the resignation of Cramer, another auditor is having health issues and cannot conduct her auditor duties at this time.

"That left us with just one auditor and you can't legally conduct an audit with just one auditor," Banaszak said.

Council also reminded residents to clear sidewalks of snow during inclement weather.

Banaszak said during the recent snowstorm, he counted eight properties on Brown Street where residents made no attempt to clear their sidewalks.

He added sidewalks must be cleared within 24-hours of any snowfall or property owners will get cited.

Lt. Mark Price of the borough's police department told council he is concerned about speeding vehicles through the center of town.

"The speeding through town is just ridiculous," he said. "We're pulling people over going 60 and 70 miles per hour in a 25 mile-per-hour zone. We will be watching this."

Price reminded drivers to clean off all windows of vehicles of snow. Also, the law states if you have your windshield wipers on, headlights must also be on.

"Residents should be cautious when preheating vehicles this holiday season," Price said. "Thieves are opportunists, so be aware."

Price thanked veterinarian John O'Laughlin with Grace Veterinary in Mt. Pleasant for his donation of $1,500 to purchase radios for the police department.
