Community Action sets turkey program

The Armstrong County Community Action Agency has been serving the disadvantaged of Armstrong County for more than 40 years. Each year the agency assists in feeding low-income and needy families for Thanksgiving. The agency coordinates this program through the existing network of 21 food banks throughout the county. With the generosity from people, all the families who signed up for food certificates in 2008 were served.

With each $10 donation, a needy family will receive a certificate which entitles them to get meat, potatoes, and vegetables for their Thanksgiving meal. The certificates are purchased at local grocery stores, which returns money back into the local economy. The agency coordinates with The Salvation Army offices, local churches, and other groups in order to avoid duplication. Also, all the money received through donations is used to purchase certificates for the needy. Because the agency is a nonprofit organization, all donations are tax deductible.

Anyone interested in helping this Thanksgiving season, is asked to let the agency as soon as possible. Any donations received after Thanksgiving will be used to buy food certificates for emergency situations or saved for next year's turkey drive. Make checks payable to Armstrong County CAA and send to Armstrong County Community Action Agency, 705 Butler Road, Kittanning, Pa. 16201, with the envelope marked "Turkey Program."
