Armstrong School District bus collides with coal truck

A school bus, carrying 17 Lenape Elementary School students, was struck by a tri-axle coal truck at the intersection of Route 66 and Pleasantview Drive Wednesday morning.

Armstrong School District transportation director Chuck Pepper said he was not aware of any injuries and said emergency crews checked out the driver and students at the scene and at Lenape Elementary School, where they were taken by another bus. He said some parents came to the scene, concerned for their children.

Pepper said the crash happened just outside the district's administration offices just after 8 a.m. when the bus driver was turning right onto Pleasantview Drive from Route 66.

"From what we understand, the bus driver swung out wide to the left to make the right turn and the driver of the coal truck must have thought the bus was turning left," Pepper said. "The front of the truck collided with the passenger side of the bus near the rear wheels."

State police, who investigated the crashed, did not issue a public report on the incident Wednesday. Armstrong 911 dispatchers said crews from Manor Township, Ford City and Ford Cliff fire departments and Ford City Ambulance were sent to the scene at 8:07 a.m.
