Mother's Day events to be held this weekend
• A Mother's Day turkey dinner - served thresherman style from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kittanning Township fire hall. The cost is adults, $7.50, children, $4.50, and free to age 5 and younger.
• A Mother's Day chicken barbecue - beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Rural Valley fire hall. Meal includes 1/2 chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, roll, beverage, and dessert for $7.
• A 1 1/2-hour wildflower walk - 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jennings Environmental Educational Center in Slippery Rock. The Jennings staff will introduce the history, uses and folklore of the season's first blooms.
• Mother's Day Tea - 1 and 6 p.m. Sunday, by reservation at Henry House Tea Room in East Brady. To reserve seats at this formal tea, call 724-526-3552.
• Mother's Day Tea - 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, by reservation at Alexandra's Tea Room in Springdale. To reserve seats, call 724-274-4490.
• Mother's Day celebration - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. Moms get in free when accompanied by their children. Mothers can enjoy chair massages, beauty consultations, self-defense demonstrations and planting tips.
• Amish country and shops - daily in the Smicksburg community. Amenities include shopping, dining, golf, greenhouses, cheese, winery, antiques, candy, and historic buildings. For directions or information, call 814-257-8485.
• Chocolate! Exhibit - 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages 2 to 18 and free for children younger than 2. The exhibit includes chocolate-themed plants, activities and displays.
