Briefs: European Beerfest tickets on sale now

The 10th "Great European Beerfest" has been scheduled for June 24 and 25 at the Sharp Edge Beer Emporium, 302 S. St. Clair St. (at Baum Boulevard), at the edge of Shadyside and East Liberty. More than 1,200 people are expected to celebrate the event, which will feature more than 100 beers from Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Scotland and Holland. The event will take place in the parking lot.

There will be three sessions -- three hours each -- over the two-day event, 3-6 p.m. or 7-10 p.m. June 24, or 2-5 p.m. June 25. A flat-fee ticket of $38 per session gives attendees the opportunity for unlinited beer sampling, and the restaurants -- including the Creekhouse -- will offer food and music representing various European Countries. Designated drivers pay $5 at the door.

Tickets -- limited to those 21 and over -- can be purchased at Sharp Edge Beer Emporium or the Creekhouse, 288 W. St., Crafton.

Farmers Markets debut this week

Six Citiparks Farmers Markets are opening for business this week, offering farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheese and baked goods from Mondays-Fridays until Nov. 22.

Bedding plants and early vegetables are featured during this month, followed by strawberries, zucchini, peas and beans in June. July is the month for corn, tomatoes and peppers. The most varieties of produce are expected in August and September, followed by apples and pumpkins in the fall.

There is no admission charge to shop the markets, open 3:30-7:30 p.m. except where otherwise noted.

    Chef Toni Pais schedules two food classes

    Chatham College has announced three cooking classes as part of its Arts, Books & Culture non-credit curriculum.

    Chef Toni Pais, owner of Cafe Zao and Cafe Zinho restaurants, will teach "To Dine For -- Elegant Summer Dining for Two" in two sessions, 6:30-9:30 p.m. May 22 and June 26. The course is limited to eight students and guests, ages 21 and older. Students will assist Pais in preparing a seasonal meal; invited guests will join them at 8 p.m. to enjoy the menu. Pais also will discuss the art of wine pairing, dining etiquette and increasing one's awareness of different foods. The classes -- $300 for both -- are set for the Chatham College Howe-Childs Gate House on the corner of Woodland Road and Fifth Avenue, Shadyside.

    Pais also will offer "Shopping in The Strip," two individual sessions limited to 12 students, during which the chef will teach about shopping for meats and vegetables from the neighborhood's experienced shop owners. Begins at La Prima Espresso Bar and ends at Nordic Fisheries. Each class -- 9 a.m.-noon June 12 or Aug. 14 -- costs $25.

    "Cucina Italiana! Preparing Memorable Summer Meals" are three three-hour classes led by Tom Hambor and Brad Walter, owners of Food Glorious Food, 5906 Bryant St., Highland Park. Students -- 21 and over -- will make pasta from scratch, homemade mozzarella cheese, sauces, gnocchi and Italian desserts. Each session includes a four-course meal and a glass of wine. The package costs $225; classes meet 6-9 p.m. June 1, 8 and 15.

    Culinary instructor to compete for national team

    Chef Scott Fetty, an instructor at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, Downtown, will be vying for a position on the prestigious American Culinary Federation Culinary Team USA. The finalists will be chosen Monday at the National Restaurant Association Restaurant, Hotel-Motel Show in Chicago. Five chefs will be selected in the annual competition to represent the country.

    Among other awards he has has won, Fetty was named the ACF Pittsburgh Chapter 2005 Chef of the Year and was a member of the 2004 ACF Culinary Regional Team USA.

    The ACF Culinary Team USA consists of some of the most talented chefs in the world.
