Democrats on Allegheny County Council today failed to muster enough votes to put a drink tax referendum on the November ballot.
Council voted 9-4 to waive a second reading on the referendum question, which would pit the county's 10 percent drink tax against a property tax increase. Ten votes were needed.
The matter will now go back to the council's Government Reform Committee.
"The question has to be more clearly vetted," said Councilman Vince Gastgeb, R-Bethel Park, one of those who voted against addressing the matter this evening. "We just got the question Friday and there are legal concerns."
Joining Gastgeb in the vote were Republicans Matt Drozd of Ross, Chuck McCullough of Upper St. Clair and Jan Rea of McCandless.
