PennDOT on Tuesday added conditions for 7,000 bridges not owned by the state to its Web site.
The state highway agency posted conditions for the 25,300 bridges it owns a week ago and yesterday added the 7,000 bridges owned by local municipalities and counties. Gov. Ed Rendell in August decided to release the condition ratings that previously were not made available to the public.
Until then, PennDOT would not release the information, saying the public might not understand it. State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Philadelphia, criticized the policy, calling on the agency to release the data. The issue surfaced as PennDOT decided to inspect 54 bridges built similarly to the Interstate 35W span that collapsed Aug. 1 in Minneapolis.
