Matthew Showman, a senior at Southmoreland High School, has compiled an extensive resume of activities and volunteer efforts during his high school career.
Showman, the son of Tracy and Arthur Showman, participates in a long list of clubs, including GEMS, Students for Life Choices, Science Club, Youth Education Association, Chess Club, Dawg Mag, newspaper staff, Business Club, Spanish Club, French Club, Science Club and Spanish National Honor Society.
Showman is secretary of the National Honor Society and serves on its ad hoc committee. He is also treasurer of the Science Club and co-captain of the Envirothon Team.
The Scottdale resident serves as a peer mentor and is a member of the public relations committee, Life Smarts Team, wellness committee, Caring Team, student council, homecoming committee, Halloween dance committee and Sony Star Class. Showman also volunteered as a teachers' and library aide. He was involved with the Science Olympiad and participates in mock trial competition. Showman sings with the high school choir, Highlander Choir and his church choir.
Many of Showman's achievements have been recognized by various organizations, including the United States Achievement Academy, the National Achievement Academy, the National Society of High School Scholars, the American Legion Award, the Volunteer Recognition Award and the National Honor Roll. He also is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. He also was awarded the Colonial Ranger Award, the Conservation Award, the Wildlife Conservation Award, Outstanding Salesmanship Award and was named a Scottie Scholar in December.
Outside of school, Showman is a member of the Scottdale Community Health Council, the Order of the Arrow and is a school board representative. He is active with the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Geyer Performing Arts Center, West Overton Museums, PA CleanWays, Arts and Music Festival, Adopt-A-Highway, American Society for the Protection and Caring of Animals, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and Humane Society of the United States.
Showman has served as a Salvation Army bell ringer and has participated in YMCA Fun Nights and Halloween celebrations. He has been a Fall Festival and SES Carnival volunteer.
Showman is active in the youth group, vacation Bible school and Wonderful Wednesdays at Christ United Methodist Church.
He has performed with the Westmoreland Academy of Performing Arts, Actors and Artists of Fayette County and the Geyer Performing Arts Center.
Showman has received his Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America and has served as a senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, patrol leader, chaplain aide, librarian and instructor.
Last year, Showman participated in the Governor's School for Health Care and the Area Health Education Center Summer Health Career Academy. He also was a member of the Excela Health Explorers. He participated in the Moose Health Conference and was a Kid's Talks participant during his junior and senior years. Showman also has been a pediatrician shadowing student for two years.
After high school, Showman plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he hopes to major in biochemistry and minor in art. His ultimate goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon.
