The Oakland Planning and Development Corp. is selling used furniture this weekend to give returning students a bargain and keep the items out of landfills.

The sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the rear of 235 Atwood St., behind the office of OPDC, a community group that is trying to revitalize Oakland.

"We have a lot of computer desks, tables and chair sets, some TV stands, some dressers as well, a few couches," said Laura Halula, a community organizer for the group.

Household goods for sale include plates, pitchers, bowls and mops.

The Furniture Recycling Project is part of the "Keep It Clean, Oakland!" initiative. Members of the nonprofit noticed salvageable furniture on the streets and in trash bins and collected more than 340 items. They will be resold to residents and students moving in to apartments.

"If we sold all the items at the prices we want," Halula said, "we could potentially raise $1,500 to $2,000." Anything that's left will be donated to Goodwill Industries.

The sale is also sponsored by the PNC Foundation and the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development.
