And then there were five: Republicans' interest in this year's Westmoreland commissioners' race, with
five GOP candidates now in the hunt, suggests a refreshing mind-set: that Democrats' 50-year hold on the top county office is not a
fait accompli. Good! Let the race begin. More importantly, let's hear from the GOP aspirants what their plans are to
improve specific areas of county government. Now's the time to put some beef in the sandwich. Simply pointing fingers at long-standing problems is not enough.
The $400,000 question: Hempfield Township supervisors are pondering whether to sell a 14-acre parcel acquired by their predecessors for an overblown -- and ultimately unrealized -- recreation center. This money -- $400,000 -- was conscripted from taxpayers with nary any input; all residents got was the bill. Here's an idea: Why not put the question to the public at the next supervisors' meeting? That's one way supervisors can at least ameliorate a terrible injustice.
