Politics & public money: The firestorm over Hempfield Municipal Authority's travel and expense "policies" has prompted cries of "politics" from some board members feeling the heat. But politics has nothing to do with an errant policy that gave individual board members credit cards. And while members frequently jetted off to various conferences on those cards, the authority reportedly enforced
no written travel policy. If the board can't distinguish authority business from
personal pursuits, its members have no business in public service.
Arrogance & fear: An invitation to Republican commissioner candidate George Dunbar from Westmoreland Commissioner Tom Balya's top aide Ted Kopas -- supposedly for a friendly chat -- is quite curious. Mr. Kopas says, "There a possibility we could be working with him as minority commissioner after the election ... ." That's assuming the Dems retain a two-member majority on the board. Arrogance aside, why bother with a meeting if the Dems aren't fearful that the Republican ticket of Kim Ward and Mr. Dunbar might reverse their fortunes at the courthouse?
