WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Swissvale, announced today that he's endorsing Democrat Barack Obama, while Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, said he won't formally endorse a presidential candidate -- although he, too, supports Obama.
Doyle and Altmire, a freshman, had been among the last three undeclared Democratic superdelegates from Pennsylvania who will vote on the party's nominee at its convention in Denver.
The third, Rep. Tim Holden, from central Pennsylvania, has not said which candidate he supports.
The announcements by Doyle and Altmire come one day after Obama sealed the Democratic presidential nomination against Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Doyle, whose district went for Obama, said in a statement that he wanted all states to vote before announcing his intention, and that he's now enthusiastically supporting Obama.
"I believed that the most important thing our party could get out of this primary was an open and transparent process that reflected the will of the Democratic voters," Doyle said.
Altmire's district went for Clinton. He said in a statement that a formal endorsement is "no longer necessary."
"The Democratic primary is over and I am going to support the nominee who was chosen by people who voted across all 50 states over the past five months," Altmire said. "I expect the vote at the convention to be uncontested and that our party will be fully united behind Senator Obama."
