The state's largest public school teachers union today endorsed Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato for governor.
The Pennsylvania State Education Association's political arm interviewed all but two candidates running and settled on Onorato because of his support for increasing state education funding and early childhood education, said PSEA spokesman Wythe Keever.
Onorato clashed with school districts in recent years as he fought to stop a court-ordered property reassessment, accusing them of using past revaluations to hike taxes without voting on a tax increase.
Keever said the PSEA supports Onorato's call for a uniform statewide assessment law and increased state aid to lower schools' reliance on property taxes.
The PSEA has 191,000 members.
