When it comes to the musical lineup at the 2006 Westmoreland Fair from Aug. 18-26, Craig Lash said to expect the air to be filled with a local brand of rock and country.
"We've got all kinds of improvements and new things to offer at the fair this year," said Lash, president of the Westmoreland Agricultural Fair & Recreation Association.
On Aug. 21, Pittsburgh-based rock band The Clarks will perform at 8 p.m. at the First Commonwealth Grandstand Arena. Tickets start at $20 for general admission, $25 for reserved, and $30 for floor seats. On Aug. 22, Tribune-Review Day at the fair, the Fayette County-bred Povertyneck Hillbillies will take the stage after opening act Midnite Run performs at 7 p.m. at the arena. Tickets for that show are $7.
The $7 general fair admission includes parking, amusement rides, admission to all commercial and agricultural exhibits and judging exhibitions, but does not include First Commonwealth Grandstand Arena events.
Also offered at the fair this year are animals of all shapes and sizes, thrilling amusement rides and delicious foods, Lash said.
On the fair's opening night, the Westmoreland Fair Queen Contest will be held at 7 p.m. in the show arena. MotoCross racing will be held at 8 p.m. in the grandstand arena Aug. 18-19.
An open miniature horse show will open festivities at 10 a.m. Aug. 20, followed by an open horse show at 6 p.m. at the 4-H Horse Arena, a demolition derby and bus derby at 7 p.m. at the grandstand arena, and a free show by country/classic rock band Prairie Fire from 7 to 9 p.m. at the show arena.
On Aug. 22, 4-H and Future Farmers of America members get in free with their membership card. A 4-H model rocket flight test will be held at 9 a.m. that day at the 4-H Horse Arena.
1480 WCNS Senior Day will be held Aug. 23, with $3 admission to people age 55 and older. Free bingo for seniors will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. that day in the show arena, followed at 3 p.m. by entertainer "Mikey Dee." Band High Ryder takes the stage from 7 to 9 p.m. The Figure 8 and Minivan Derby will be held at 7:30 p.m. that day at the grandstand arena.
Admission on Aug. 24, Family Day, will be $6 per person from 1 to 11 p.m., and 4-H and FFA members get in free with a membership card. The day includes a Skid Loader Rodeo Contest at 1 p.m. at the grandstand arena, followed by a 4-H Benefit Auction at 6 p.m. at the show arena, and a 4x4 Truck Pull at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstand arena.
On Aug. 25, the Supreme Dairy Animal Selection will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the show arena, followed by the animal dressing contest at 3:30 p.m. and the Premier Showmanship Contest at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., a parade of vehicles, including Superstock 4x4 trucks, Limited Pf/super farm tractors, road semis and tri-axles, will be on display at the grandstand arena.
4-H and FFA members again get in free with a membership card on Aug. 26, when the Championship Horse Pull will be held at the grandstand arena, followed by the Powder Puff and Demolition Derby at 7:30 p.m. Stoney Ridge will play a free show from 7 to 9 p.m. at the show arena.
Fair hours on Aug. 18 are from 4 to 11 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Aug. 19-26. The Family Living, Agricultural, and 4-H buildings will be open 5 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 18, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Aug. 19-26. Commercial exhibit buildings will be open 4 to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 18, and 1 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 19-26.
