Fairs in Westmoreland, Fayette and Indiana counties are among some 55 across the state poised to receive a share of $750,000 in matching grants to upgrade their facilities, Gov. Ed Rendell announced Monday.
The capital improvement matching grants are part of the $4 million Pennsylvania Fair Fund, which provides financial assistance to fairs for operating costs and to youth organizations with agricultural missions.
In Westmoreland, the county fair was awarded $14,705 to construct handicap-accessible restrooms and add air conditioning to the banquet hall. The Derry Township Ag fair will receive $13,640 for Phase I of the Animal Market Complex project, which includes concrete flooring, drainage and pen panels.
In Fayette, the county fair will receive $3,150 for electrical upgrades and improvements to the livestock barns. The Mountain Area Fair will get $15,000 for Phase II of the electrical and lighting project, and the Bullskin Township Community Fair was awarded $9,500 for improvements to the parking lot.
The Green Township Fair, in Indiana County, will receive $7,000 to pave walkways on the fairgrounds.
According to Rendell, fairs across the state host 6 million visitors annually.
