Hearing set for Penn Township woman in attempted homicide

A preliminary hearing is scheduled May 6 for a Westmoreland County woman accused of shooting at a man riding an all-terrain vehicle.

Vivian Covin, 76, of Penn Township remains jailed in Westmoreland County Prison on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person in the incident that occurred about 9 a.m. April 19.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Penn Township police, Covin fired a shot at Craig Szmyd after he angered her by placing a survey peg back in the ground that Covin had removed.
