Several homes along the 400 block of Church Street in Delmont were evacuated for 1 1/2 hours Monday morning after a contractor mistakenly struck a natural gas service line.

Delmont police said the accident occurred at 10:14 a.m. when the contractor, who was not identified, struck a single home service line while digging in a yard and caused a leak.

Delmont and White Valley volunteer fire departments were summoned to assist police with the evacuation and traffic control until Dominion Peoples service crews could arrive to repair the break. Police said the residents were permitted back into their homes at 11:51 a.m.

Police remind contractors to telephone Pennsylvania One Call system at 811 or 800-242-1776 before beginning any digging projects.
