Norwin school directors are keeping open their options for the proposed expansion of the district administration building.

In June, the board was presented with a $2 million draft plan by Hank Tkacik of Axis Architecture to increase the building from 7,500 square feet to 13,342 square feet.

That was thought to be too pricey.

Board President Robert Perkins said the board was presented Monday with six different options.

"The first option presented last month was too costly," Perkins said. "We'll look at those options and probably come back with a few more."

School directors will hold their monthly workshop meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 and their voting meeting at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

"Next month, we'll discuss it further," Perkins said. "We'll take a look at which way we want to go."

The plan presented in June featured a boardroom twice as big as the current space, along with an executive session room. Directors have no executive session chambers and have to move to Norwin High School or other buildings when the crowd exceeds the boardroom's capacity.

"When deliveries come in, we store things in the hall," said Superintendent Jack Boylan.

"Ten years ago, we did not have a technician. Now we have three and they're pretty much sitting on top of each other," Boylan said. "There's just no space in this building."

Business Manager John Wilson and three other employees are cramped in a business office Boylan described as "not a large space."

"Over the years, we've had to meet needs and add people. Now we need space to accommodate those people," Boylan said. "We are working with the board to determine what is the most efficient amount of space in which we could work effectively and be fair in cost to the taxpayer."

In other business, the board hired Wendy Romeo as the field hockey coach. She had resigned from the job after last season because she initially felt she would not be able to give the necessary time to the post, Boylan said.

Romeo guided the team to the WPIAL Class AAA championship game in 2006, when they lost to North Allegheny.
