The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has scheduled additional opportunities to sign up for E-ZPass at Westmoreland Mall.
Sign-up teams will staff the kiosk from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. today, Aug. 13-16, Aug. 20-23 and Aug. 27-30.
People opening an account should have their driver's license, vehicle registration card and a major credit card.
Those who enroll in the electronic fare collection program will receive an E-ZPass "tag" that can immediately be used in any fare collection lane, in Pennsylvania and elsewhere where the purple E-ZPass logo is displayed.
The tag is a small transponder mounted on the windshield that sends a signal to an overhead reader in the fare collection lane. The devices interact to classify vehicles and deduct appropriate fares from prepaid accounts while drivers keep moving.
The cost is $38 to open an account, with $35 used as a prepaid balance that does not expire. Paying by credit card or debit card allows for the authorization of automatic replenishment when the prepaid balance drops below $10.
Transponders can be moved between vehicles. Customers can view transactions and print monthly statements from the turnpike's Web site.
Pennsylvania's E-ZPass program functions with designated fare-collection lanes on most Northeastern and Atlantic Seaboard toll roads extending as far as Illinois.
