As Florida braces for a possible landfall by Hurricane Ike early next week, two Ligonier women serving as American Red Cross volunteers will depart today for Orlando to assist in relief operations in the state.

Marianne McAuliffe and Rosemarie Evans said they expect to be working in a shelter for evacuees and possibly assisting with mass feeding at a location to be determined by the relief organization as part of their three-week assignment.

The women are volunteering through the Latrobe-based Chestnut Ridge Chapter.

Bill Barger, director of fund development for the chapter, said the Red Cross estimates it will need $100 million to cover the costs of relief operations associated with the hurricane season. To date, $5 million has been raised.

Donations may be sent to: 2008 Disaster Relief Fund, American Red Cross, Chestnut Ridge Chapter, 1816 Lincoln Ave., Latrobe, PA 15650.
