Greensburg Tuesday takes
Ordinance updating: In preparation for its new "codification book," Mt. Pleasant officials have been going through the borough's many ordinances and updating them. Sure, it's tedious. But it's necessary work, especially for jurisdictions that rely on antiquated laws that have no practical application today. Occasional review and updates of local laws -- and the elimination of useless ones -- should be a must for all jurisdictions.
Peace and quiet: Some Southwest Greensburg residents are sleeping better since the borough's fire siren has been inoperative. And that raises a pertinent question from residents: Why rely on an old-fashioned, obnoxious siren when there are modern alternatives, such as pagers and other devices, that are equally effective? Of course, the cost of new digital technology is a big factor. But so, too, should be residents' quality of life.
Fighting the flu: It's good to see that Westmoreland school districts are preparing, not panicking, in advance for the swine flu this fall. Many are underscoring the most effective treatment against the H1N1 virus: good, ol'-fashioned vigorous hand-washing. The Hempfield Area district, for one, will use a special lotion that helps students improve their hand-washing by revealing those areas that they miss. Pass the soap, and plenty of it.
