Partnership to offer students credit for volunteer work
Amizade is an international charity established in 1994 that networks volunteers to charity projects throughout the world. Amizade is the Portuguese word for friendship.
The partnership with the University of Pittsburgh will allow students who take part in Amizade volunteer projects and earn college credit for their work. As part of the partnership, Amizade has created 12 program sites for students. Up to 15 students will take part at each site.
Amizade now has partnerships with 50 colleges and universities nationwide.
Group officials conducted an open house yesterday as a way to get Amizade's name before the public, said spokesman Eric Hartman. Amizade officials also unveiled its new Web site and logo.
"We have been around for a while, but we have relied heavily on word of mouth to get our name out," Hartman said. "This open house is a chance for us to take a different approach in how we present ourselves."
In 2003, Amizade has plans to offer service on five continents. Past projects have included a community health program in Tanzania and work on a vocational center for street children in Brazil, as well as helping at an orphanage and helping to build a hospital in Bolivia.
