Pittsburgh Newsmaker: Cynthia Kinnan

  • Age: 22

  • Residence: Golden, Colo.

  • Family: Parents Kathryn and Neil; and brother, Greg, 19

  • Background: Kinnan is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh Honors College with a double major in economics and mathematics. She is a Debate All-American for 2002 and president of Pitt's chapter of Amnesty International. She researched the economics in Shanghai and Nanjing, China, last summer.

  • Noteworthy: The British Embassy has named Kinnan one of 40 Marshall Scholarship winners nationwide for 2003. She was chosen from more than 950 candidates nominated by more than 50 colleges and universities in America. The British Parliament created the scholarship in honor of Gen. George Marshall as a tribute for American aid after World War II. The scholarship funds study toward a degree at any British university for two or three years. Kinnan plans to use her scholarship to get a master's degree in global market economics at the London School of Economics.
