Bloomfield Bridge Tavern

Location: 4412 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield, (412) 682-8611.

Atmosphere: "Pittsburgh's Polish Party House!" pretty much says it all. This is as Pittsburgh as it gets. First of all, it's impossible to miss: The first thing you see coming off the Bloomfield Bridge are the massive portraits of Polish heroes on the outside wall. Inside, it's all cozy dark reds and browns, with an impressive assemblage of reflective lager signs and steins mixed with lovingly collected memorabilia of Pittsburgh - and Polish - sporting heroes. The only downsides are the folding tables and chairs, which are moved out when this place turns into a rock club on weekends and everybody has to stand.

Party People: Locals on the weekdays; a younger - but not much younger - rock crowd on the weekends, when the bands take the stage. A very friendly, laid back lot.

Eats: Polish food makes great bar food, especially on nights of bone-chilling cold. Try the delicious homemade pierogies, golabkis (stuffed cabbage) and, especially, the bit-o'-everything Polish Platter.

Tunes: Calliope's long-running acoustic music showcase is on Tuesday nights. Wednesday nights is "Fuze," a long-running night of experimental electronic music - drum and bass, to be exact - that couldn't clash more with its old-school surroundings, yet has stayed popular anyway. Local rock bands crowd the small stage Friday and Saturday nights.

Specials: $1 imported beers on Thursdays. At least 10 beers on tap. Good prices on domestic beers.

Cover: Rarely more than $5, even for national touring acts.
