Newsmaker: Ericka Anderson

Occupation: She is a junior majoring in biology at Carnegie Mellon University.

Background: Anderson has spent the past two years doing research in molecular genetics in the laboratory of Peter Berget, associate professor of biological sciences. She wants to earn a doctorate in genetics and work in academia or industry.

Noteworthy: Anderson is one of just 15 students in the country to win the 2003 United Negro College Fund/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship. She received the $25,000 scholarship and two summer stipends totaling $10,000 for her outstanding work in biomedical research.

Quote: "Everything about genetics excites me. I want to heal diseases. I'm also interested in forensics. I think it would be cool to work in a lab and help solve crimes."
