Education: Gismondi received his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1975 and his law degree from Pitt in 1978.
Background: Gismondi, a personal injury lawyer, served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond from 1978-81 before entering private practice. He opened his firm, Gismondi & Associates, in 1987. Gismondi served a one-year term as president of the Allegheny County Bar Association in 1996. His latest high-profile lawsuit attempts to hold liable a Pittsburgh neurologist for his alleged failure to properly treat a blackout-prone motorist before the driver caused an accident in which two women died.
Noteworthy: As chairman of the medical malpractice section of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyer's Association, Gismondi is taking a leading role in trying to block state legislators' attempts to cap cash damage awards in malpractice suits and other cases.
Quote: "We have to do everything we can to make sure the cases that do get filed are good ones. On the other hand, if people do have legitimate claims, I don't believe it's fair to put arbitrary limits on what their claim is."
