Notebook: Miree returns to practice wearing brace
The injury kept the senior starter from playing in the Panthers' 37-26 victory over Texas A&M last Saturday in College Station. Miree had hoped to play against his former coach at Alabama -- Aggies coach Dennis Franchione -- but coach Walt Harris decided to keep him out of the game.
"The good thing is that there's no fracture," said Miree, who sustained the injury in the third quarter of the Panthers' 35-31 loss at Toledo in Week 3. "Coach said he would put me in if he needed me, but he decided to go with the younger guys."
Sophomore Jawan Walker started in Miree's place and ran for 87 yards on 20 carries. Miree said he expects to play a week from tomorrow when the Panthers (3-1) return to the field for a meeting with Notre Dame (1-3) at 6 p.m. at Heinz Field. The game will be televised by ESPN.
"The things that hurt the worst are the planting and cutting," said Miree, who has 248 yards and four touchdowns on 56 carries. "I'm just going to work hard on my rehab so I can get back out there."
THE INJURED
Pitt senior defensive end Claude Harriott did not practice yesterday due to a right ankle injury he sustained in the Texas A&M game. Harris said Harriott is "not ready." The Pitt coach also re-iterated that wide receiver Chris Curd (knee) could be out for an extended period.
Meantime, senior linebacker Lewis Moore, who left the Texas A&M game with an injury to a muscle in his neck, practiced wearing an orange jersey, indicating he was not at full health. Senior wide receiver Princell Brockenbrough also practiced after missing his first start of the season against the Aggies with an ankle injury. He did, however, play, and had three catches for 100 yards with a score.
INTERNAL AFFAIRS
Pitt freshman offensive lineman Jason Capizzi, a 6-foot-9, 300-pound graduate of Pine-Richland High School, did not practice yesterday after an incident last week on the South Side in which he was cited for a summary offense. Harris said the matter is being handled internally.
