Flynn rallies Greater Latrobe

Senior quarterback Ryan Flynn threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Braden on fourth down with 58 seconds left to lift Greater Latrobe to a 34-27 victory over Plum in a WPIAL Class AAAA Quad South Conference game Friday night.

"It's been a month since we've won, so this was very satisfying," Latrobe coach Pat Murray said. "There were a lot of big plays on both sides. We always tell our kids they've got to make plays to win."

The victory by the Wildcats (4-4, 2-3) ended a four-game losing streak and kept them in the running for a playoff berth. Latrobe plays host to Penn-Trafford on Friday, with the winner earning a spot in the postseason.

Flynn, who threw three touchdown passes, finished with 209 yards passing to eclipse 5,000 for his career.

Both teams saved their best shots for the second half.

Plum took a 20-19 lead on a 56-yard halfback pass from Matt Pellis to Kelly Fisher.

Latrobe took a 26-20 lead when Scott West broke two tackles on a 73-yard touchdown from Flynn.

Plum took a 27-26 lead on Fisher's 71-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Gino Rometo, setting the stage for Flynn's game-winning pass to Braden.

"We didn't put the game away the way we wanted to," Gateway coach Terry Smith said. "We are trying to prepare for the playoffs and games like this don't help. We did make a statement early and our defense is really stepping it up. They don't get the credit that the offense gets."

Kiski coach Dave Grimm said his team had trouble getting anything going last night. His Cavaliers got a 12-yard run for a touchdown from Justin Wray and a 3-yard run for another score from Adam Gunn. Kiski drops to 5-3, 3-2.

"That is a very good football team," Grimm said. "You can't spot a team like Gateway 35 points."
