Staff at newspapers cut by 4%
Most of the layoffs, which involve about 4 percent of the company's work force, became effective Wednesday, said Edward H. Harrell, the company's president.
"While we regret we had to make this decision, we believe we have to slim down to remain a cost-effective organization," Harrell said. "This has been a difficult period for companies in the media business. We put this off for a long period of time, and tried to keep as many people as possible on the job."
Despite the reductions, which affect most departments, the Tribune-Review remains a major regional employer, providing jobs for more than 1,200 people, Harrell said.
In addition, he pointed out that just-released circulation figures show gains in the combined circulation of the company's two largest newspapers, the Tribune-Review in Greensburg and the Allegheny County-based Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, over the last six months.
The other daily publications of Tribune-Review Publishing are the Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum, the Daily Courier in Connellsville, the Valley Independent in Monessen and the Leader Times in Kittanning.
