Education conference to explore Holocaust

Members of the local Catholic community may attend a conference sponsored by the National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education, based at Seton Hill College.

The center's sixth Holocaust Education Conference is dedicated to Pope John Paul II, who recently marked his 25th anniversary as pope.

These talks will be held at Cecilian Hall, on the college's campus in Greensburg:

  • 2 p.m. Saturday -- Philip A. Cunningham, "Catholic Textbook Presentations of Jews and Judaism."

  • 11 a.m. Sunday -- John A. Pawlikowski, "Why Teach the Holocaust in Catholic School?"

  • 1 p.m. Sunday -- Screening of "Tak.for.Alt: Survival of a Human Spirit," with Holocaust survivor Judy Meisel, filmmaker Laura Bialis and curriculum guide co-author Kathleen McSharry.

  • 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Mary C. Boys, keynote address "Remembering the Shoah: An Educational and Theological Challenge in the Third Millennium."

  • 9 a.m. Monday -- Daniel C. Napolitano, "When Catholics Study the Holocaust: Guidelines for Owning the Intercultural Experience of Studying and teaching about the Holocaust."

  • 10 a.m. Monday -- Eva Fleischner, "Rescuers of Jews During the Holocaust."

    Other events are a gallery talk about the paintings of Anna Walinska with curator Rosina Rubin, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the campus's Harlan Gallery, and a Kristallnacht Remembrance Service with Holocaust survivors Meisel and Marga Randall, 4 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Chapel.
