WVU to withdraw offer to Ohio's Mr. Football

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- West Virginia University intends to withdraw its offer for an athletic grant-in-aid to Raymond Williams, pending the outcome of his legal proceedings.

Williams, Ohio's Mr. Football, has been jailed in Cleveland and accused of participating in a robbery April 16 that led to the shooting of a teammate from Benedictine High School. Williams has been held on suspicion of murder.

"This is a very tragic situation," said West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez. "We share in the shock of the recent tragedy with his teammates, coaches and school officials in Cleveland."

Williams is Benedictine's career leader in rushing yards (7,045), touchdowns (89) and points (538).

Williams and Jon Huddleston, both 18, were jailed Monday in connection with the murder of Lorenzo Hunter, 16. Both have been suspended indefinitely and banned from school activities.

Hunter, Williams and Huddleston allegedly took part in a robbery. Hunter was shot by Rodney Roberts, 20, the person being robbed. Roberts was charged with aggravated murder last week.
