Center recognizes teachers' excellence
The honors were presented at the Teacher Recognition Program at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. One hundred teachers from 42 school districts in Southwestern Pennsylvania were recognized from a pool of more than 3,000 nominees.
The Teachers of Excellence winners, selected from the 100 honorees, are:
"The nominations were absolutely outstanding," said Christine Veverka, executive director at the Teacher Excellence Center, Downtown, sponsor of the event. "It was very difficult to give recognition to just 100 of the nominees. We have so many excellent teachers."
The Teacher Excellence Center's mission is to recognize and honor outstanding teachers in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
The center received 3,170 nominations from 59 school districts.
A panel of judges reviewed the nominations and selected the Top 100 nominees. Each nominee received a certificate and pin.
The Top 100 nominees submitted essays and were interviewed by another panel of judges.
This was the first year for the Teacher Excellence Center awards.
From 1992 to 2003, the Teacher Excellence Foundation, based in Mt. Lebanon, honored the area's top teachers with cash prizes of as much as $20,000 that went directly to teachers rather than schools. But with a $200,000 shortfall in its $500,000 annual operating budget, the foundation closed July 1.
Retired Pittsburgh Technical Institute President J.R. McCartan started the Teacher Excellence Center the same day.
