Chris Heinz didn't miss a beat when asked about being named one of America's "50 Hottest Bachelors" in the upcoming issue of People magazine.

"I got a few piercing e-mails about that this morning," said Heinz, heir to the Heinz food fortune. Then, without cracking a smile, he added: "That's pure politics, and I don't appreciate it."

The quip brought roars of laughter at a house party Wednesday in Shadyside where Heinz wooed supporters of his stepfather's bid for the presidency.

Heinz, 31, is the son of Teresa Heinz Kerry, of Fox Chapel, and the late Republican U.S. Sen. John Heinz. His mother married U.S. Sen. John Kerry -- the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee -- in 1995.

"Doesn't he define 'eligible bachelor'?" said Vick Boughton, a senior editor at People Magazine. "He's very attractive -- a really nice-looking guy. He's smart and very well-educated, and, let's face it, he is an heir to a lot of money."

Heinz, who describes himself as "a pretty private person," has shared some of the national spotlight while campaigning for Kerry. If the publicity in People magazine helps, he'll accept it as a plus, he said.

"I'm not on the cover, thank God," said Heinz, who plans to register as a Democrat in Allegheny County. He's now an independent registered in New York City.

He said he may become a political candidate some day -- but not this year.
