Storm causes severe damage
The 20-minute cloudburst caused severe damage to the southwest corner of the township, prompting officials to declare a state of emergency, he said.
Stream flooding caused 3 to 6 inches of water in some areas. There were numerous landslides, fallen trees, washed out roads and damaged storm water systems in some areas, Hoy told commissioners Monday night.
The commissioners will meet again at 7 p.m. July 6 to assess the total damage and cost estimates for repairs
Bowman and Alpine roads and the Alpine and Parks roads' bridges are of immediate concern.
"We'll evaluate whether the bridges will need to be replaced," Hoy said. "The storm system on both Alpine and Bowman roads will have to be upgraded, and Bowman Road will have to be rebuilt."
Portions of Coal Pit, Parks and Millers Run roads and the Fairview plan off Boyce Road will be assessed for minor repairs this week. A few property owners also reported basement flooding and yard damage.
Bob Barish, South Fayette's public works director will meet this week with Allegheny County officials to evaluate any assistance the county could provide in equipment, materials or manpower.
The township also will seek funding from the county and state for cleanup and to repair infrastructure damage, Hoy said. If the bridges need to be replaced, the total cost could exceed $2 million.
"These are significant costs, and that's why we're trying to get our state legislators involved," Hoy said. "It's certainly something we haven't budgeted for."
