Since Class AAA Nashville's season ended last night, four players -- catcher J.R. House, outfielder Tony Alvarez, infielder Freddy Sanchez and pitcher Mark Corey -- will be added to the Pirates' active roster today. Outfielder J.J. Davis also will be recalled from a rehab assignment, but he will remain on the disabled list with a strained right hip flexor. In addition, Nashville manager Trent Jewett and hitting coach Jeff Livesey will join the Pirates' coaching staff for the remainder of the season. Sanchez has battled injuries since being acquired in July 2003 from Boston. In 43 games for Nashville, he batted .267 with one homer, 11 RBI and four stolen bases. "I'm anxious to see him play," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I'm not sure how much playing time he's going to see here, but I'm going to try to work him in."
Not everyone who was on McClendon's September call-up wish list will be joining the team. McClendon smirked when asked what he would like to see from his team over the final 28 days of the season. "There's some things I'd like to see, but I probably won't see 'em," he said. "There are some people I'd like to see that I won't see this year."
Altoona opens the Eastern League Southern Division playoffs tomorrow against Erie, the Detroit Tigers' Class AA affiliate. The game is set for 6:35 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona. Hickory will play host to Charleston, W.Va., tomorrow in the first game of a best-of-3 Class A playoff series. Hickory set a single-season franchise record for home runs this year. Three Crawdads -- Mike Cockrell, Adam Boeve and Jon Benick -- went deep Sunday, upping the team's season total to 135.
McClendon declined to identify the players to whom he was referring.
