Local celebrities to read from banned books tonight at library in Oakland

The Carnegie Library's main branch in Oakland will host Pittsburgh's ninth annual "Read-Out" tonight as part of Banned Books Week.

Beginning at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall, local celebrities will read excerpts from their favorite banned and challenged books, such as J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Patterson -- all on the American Library Association's list of top 10 banned or challenged books of 2003.

"It's entertaining and a fun way to remind Americans not to take for granted the freedom to read," said Lane Cigna, communications manager for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

City Councilman Doug Shields and WYEP (91.3 FM) host Kate Borger will be among the readers. Drag king Sir Lix-a-Lot will perform banned songs.

Members of the Steel City Poetry Slam Team will be on hand, freestyling poetry based on banned material.

Banned Books Week has been nationally observed since 1982.
