Lenny Wilkens resigned Saturday as coach of the New York Knicks and Herb Williams was named to replace him.
Wilkens is both the winningest and losingest coach in NBA history, with a record of 1,332-1,155 in 32 seasons with Seattle, Portland, Cleveland, Atlanta, Toronto and New York.
The 46-year-old Williams takes over with the Knicks on a five-game losing streak. The team has lost nine of 10 and has a 17-22 record.
Williams has been with the Knicks since joining the club as a player in 1992 and has been an assistant coach in recent years.
"We are pleased to give Herb Williams this opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Knicks, and we'll do everything we can to help him succeed," said Isiah Thomas, the team's president.
Wilkens, 67, and the legendary John Wooden are the only two members of the Hall of Fame as both coach and player.
Wilkens had two years and $10 million left on his contract and is undecided about accepting an offer to remain with the team in another capacity.
