Collins' late layup lead WVU over St. John's

NEW YORK -- J.D. Collins' layup with 1.8 seconds to play gave West Virginia a 67-66 victory over St. John's on Wednesday night.

Kevin Pittsnogle had 21 points for the Mountaineers (15-8, 5-7 Big East), who led by as many as 14 points in beating the Red Storm for the fourth straight time.

St. John's (8-14, 2-10) took a 66-65 lead on a 12-foot jumper by Daryll Hill with 9.7 seconds to go. He was fouled on the play by Collins, but missed the free throw. Collins' game-winning layup circled the rim before falling through.

Hill, who was 11 for 17 from the field, had 27 points and seven assists.

Mike Gansey added 18 points for West Virginia, which had lost seven of 10, while Tyrone Sally had 12.

Lamont Hamilton had 17 points for the Red Storm.

Gansey had nine points in a 19-4 run that made it 19-5 with 13:50 left in the first half. The Mountaineers led 21-7 with 12:31 to go when Dexter Gray scored five points in a 14-6 run that got St. John's within six with 6:29 to go.

Hill scored five straight points and seven overall in an 8-1 run that got the Red Storm within 34-31 with 2:08 left in the half.

Pittsnogle's 3-pointer gave West Virginia a 44-37 lead 1:52 into the second half, but Hill had 11 points in a 17-4 run that gave the Red Storm a six-point lead with 11:17 to go.
