Residence: Squirrel Hill
Age: 37
Family: Single
Education: Ramsey received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia and a doctorate in geology from Arizona State University in Tempe.
Noteworthy: Ramsey has received a $160,000 three-year grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to study lava flow surfaces on the Earth and Mars. The goal of the study is to better interpret information on new volcanic surfaces in Hawaii and to apply the information to older geologic surfaces on Mars.
Background: Ramsey is an assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Geology and Planetary Science. He has conducted research on satellite technology and land imaging for NASA. He also has done extensive research on volcanic activity on Earth and the surface of Mars.
Quote: "Our hope is that by gaining a better understanding of the flows in Hawaii, we will be able to interpret the conditions on Mars at the time the flows formed there," said Ramsey, who noted that martian lava flows seen from orbit are strikingly similar to older lava flows seen in Hawaii.
