Carnegie policemen use call of the wild to roust home's intruder

Suzan Barefoot cried fowl Wednesday morning when an oversized intruder burst into her Carnegie home.

The prowler -- a large wild turkey -- crashed through the kitchen window of the home on Federal Avenue moments after Barefoot stepped away from the sink to go to the bathroom.

"I would have probably been injured very badly or had a heart attack with a turkey right on top of me," said Barefoot, who declined to give her age. "It sounded like the whole, entire wall had come down."

When she looked into the kitchen, "this gigantic turkey is looking right back at me, right there in front of my stove."

"I just screamed, and I slammed the bedroom door, and I was, like, shaking."

Carnegie police officers Mark Samangy and Michael Dorsch arrived within minutes of Barefoot's call for help.

"The whole window itself -- the frame and everything -- was on the floor," Samangy said. "The turkey punched the whole window out."

A frightened Barefoot remained in the bedroom. She could hear the turkey "flopping around and running into things."

"I didn't know if I'd be able to move fast enough to get away from him," she said.

The officers had a little trouble finding the big bird until Dorsch, an avid hunter, began making turkey calls. The bird poked its head out from behind the television, Samangy said.

The bird then dashed off into the woods after the officers shooed it outside.

"We didn't harm the turkey at all, and there were no injuries," Samangy said. "Thank God for my partner."
