Editor's note: This article was modified Friday, April 1, 2005, to correctly identify the group under which Venture Outdoors operates.

Venture Outdoors has found a new insurance supplier and will resume outside activities Saturday.

The organization operates under the Tides Center, a nationwide nonprofit umbrella, and had been getting its insurance though Tides. The suppliers decided to bill individual organizations, rather than Tides as a whole, making insurance too costly, Schiller said in late February.

That caused activities to be canceled for March during a search for coverage.

In a letter being sent today to members of the outdoor advocacy group headquartered Downtown, executive director Mike Schiller says rock-climbing and horseback-riding programs would be canceled for now. A $3 insurance surcharge also would be added to the fee for many other activities.

Michael Sobkowiak, communications director of the group, says additional insurance companies could be added.

Schiller says the group is trying to find insurance coverage for the canceled items.

Besides the cancellation of some events, some activities that had been held in conjunction with other organizations have been turned over entirely to them. They include the Weekly Walks in the Woods, held with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and the Mountain Bike Rambles, co-sponsored by Pittsburgh Off Road Cyclists.

There are no changes for the Banff Mountain Film Festival set for April 13 at the Byham Theater, Downtown, or the Venture Outdoors Festival set for May 21 on the North Shore.

In addition, the Kayak Pittsburgh rental facility on the North Shore will open May 1, weather permitting, Schiller says.
