Jeannette's Thomas chooses Seton Hill
That announcement was made jointly Wednesday by Griffins football coach Chris Snyder and basketball coach Tony Morocco.
"Jordan is an outstanding athlete and can help a football team win games in many different ways," Snyder said in a news release yesterday. "I'm excited to have an athlete of his caliber join our program for our inaugural season."
Thomas, a three-year starting quarterback and team captain with the Jayhawks, was named first team All-Interstate Conference in his junior and senior year. He was also named to the Associated Press Second Team All-State as a defensive back.
With Seton Hill's inaugural football season set to kickoff this fall, Jeannette coach Bob Murphy likes Thomas' chances with the Griffins.
"He competes like nobody else," Murphy said. "I'm very excited for him. He could be the cornerstone for the new football team at Seton Hill this season at quarterback or, because of his tremendous ability, at a number of different positions."
In addition to football, Thomas also plans to play basketball with Seton Hill.
The Jayhawks starting point scored 1,398 career points and holds records for assists (673) and steals (330).
He was named to the Associated Press All-State Class AA second team and was a Tribune-Review first team All-Star.
Jeannette's two athletic teams enjoyed a lot of success with Thomas as the leader.
Thomas is hopefully to be able to play both sports at Seton Hill. He's played basketball against some of the Seton Hill players and knows he can contribute.
"We're going to find out," Thomas said. "I'm going to work hard this summer and we'll see what happens.
"Coach Morocco is one of the reasons I'm going to Seton Hill."
In addition to his impressive play in both football and basketball, Thomas has a 3.5 grade point average and was named a Pittsburgh YMCA Scholar Athlete.
"We require three things in a student athlete; that he be a good person who graduates and wins championships, and that's Jordan Thomas," Morocco said. "He is the ultimate Jayhawk."
Thomas plans on majoring in either education or business at Seton Hill.
"Jordan is a gifted and excellent student and a leader," Murphy said. "He's so competitive."
Thomas selected Seton Hill over Mt. Union and Westminster.
Jeannette basketball coach Rick Klimchock said that Seton Hill is getting a tremendous person. He expects Thomas to shine brightly on the football field and on the basketball court.
Thomas was at his best in big games. As a junior, the Jayhawks football team played for the WPIAL Class AA title.
The past two basketball seasons, Thomas helped the Jayhawks win the section title and advance deep into the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA playoffs. He averaged more than 16.5 points and 7.1 assists per game.
He combined quickness, athletic ability and the love of the game.
"Well see what happens," Thomas said. "I'm excited about giving both sports a shot."
