Coal waste to be cleared following pair's deaths
A coal waste pile will be cleared after a Bentleyville couple drove over it in an all-terrain vehicle and tumbled 60 feet to their deaths, state Department of Environmental Protection officials said.
David Creek, 30, and his wife, Lori, 31, were found dead May 8 in Pigeon Creek below a cliff formed by the pile. Family members said the Creeks went riding May 7 and never returned. Authorities believe they drove over the gob pile in Ellsworth without realizing it.
Mittal Steel USA of Chicago has since claimed ownership of the 11-acre waste pile and has posted new "no trespassing" signs and a barricade since the accident. DEP officials said the gob pile will be cleaned up and the site leveled this summer at a cost of $1.8 million.
