Catholic school to close
The James L. Lavelle Memorial School in West Mifflin will close at the end of the school year, Diocese of Pittsburgh officials announced yesterday. The Catholic school had a projected enrollment of 108 children for the 2005-06 school year -- less than half of its 1997-98 enrollment of 224 pupils. The decline would have forced the school to increase tuition by at least $1,000 per student.
Lavelle was heavily damaged in a May 2002 macroburst that tore through the Mon Valley. Winds topping 100 mph lifted the school's roof and sent it crashing down atop the two-story school's framework. Classes were moved to a temporary location at the St. Rita school building in Munhall while Resurrection Parish renovated the school. Lavelle reopened in August 2003.
Lavelle is the third school slated to close this year. The dioceses announced earlier that Good Samaritan Catholic School in Ambridge, Beaver County, and St. Stephen Catholic School in Hazelwood also will close their doors at the end of the school year.
