Sports fans will have an opportunity to bid on memorabilia at the Auction For The Animals on Friday at Mt. View Inn, Route 30 east of Greensburg.

The second annual auction fundraiser for Action For Animals Humane Society, a no-kill shelter near Latrobe, has 65 items in the live auction by volunteer auctioneer Dean Zug, of Blairsville, and 95 pieces in the silent auction.

The sports collectibles include a hockey stick and jersey signed by Pittsburgh Penguins' Mario Lemieux, a jersey signed by Michael Jordan of the Washington Wizards, a hat signed by golf master Vijay Singh, a football signed by Jerome Bettis of the Pittsburgh Steelers, two baseballs signed by Dick Groat, and two signed by Bill Mazerosky, both Pittsburgh Pirates.

Seton Hill University's first football team, coach Chris Snyder and President JoAnne Boyle donated a football with all their signatures. There also is a scale replica of the golf course tractor that Arnold Palmer rode around the Latrobe Country Club, complete with his autograph.

The sports collectibles were solicited by veterinarian Dr. Henry L. Croft Jr., of Stahlstown, who is co-chairman of the fundraiser, and his father, Henry L. Croft Sr., of North Huntingdon.

"The community has been so generous in its donations," said Laura Guskiewicz, who also co-chairs the event.

Many businesses contributed baskets of products and services, gift certificates for golf courses and spas, and collections of animal care items including a large dog bed wrapped around an assortment of dog gifts. There are entertainment, dinner and getaway packages, too.

Individuals donated indoor and outdoor decor, an old Longaberger basket, a gas grill and posters.

"Elaine Nordlund, of Latrobe, donated a number of framed prints in memory of her father," Guskiewicz said. "Many of them are wildlife and Native American themes, and some are signed limited editions."

Original art includes a hand-painted dry sink and other wooden pieces donated by artist Heather Snyder, of Arona.
