Official says Mills mall will be ready
So says the Arlington, Va.-based Mills Corp., the developer of the 1.1 million-square-foot enclosed mall in Frazer.
Those include an updated list of 16 new tenants disclosed Tuesday.
"When we open, most of our stores will be ready," said Larry Costello, vice president and development director for Mills, which previously announced the mall would be anchored by such stores at Kaufmann's, J.C. Penney, Dick's Sporting Goods, Borders Books and Music, Linens 'n Things, and Sears Grand.
Billed as a "destination" center, Pittsburgh Mills also will include a 16-screen Cinemark movie theater, including a large-format theater featuring a 5-story screen; a 16-lane Lucky Strike Lanes bowling/nightclub facility; and a NASCAR SpeedPark, which will include electric car racing, miniature golf, bumper boats, a climbing wall and other amusement activities.
A large majority of the outlets will debut July 14, although exceptions include Sears Grand, which plans a fall opening, and NASCAR, which hasn't yet announced an opening date.
Representatives of some of those stores are expected to be on hand for a career fair scheduled June 3 and 4 at the Regional Sports Complex in New Kensington to fill some of the 3,500 jobs being created at Pittsburgh Mills.
Costello acknowledged there had been some early delays in site preparation at the Mills complex, which is being built just off Route 28 in northeast Allegheny County. But he said the construction schedule now is up to speed.
"We had some delays in completing site work, but that's all behind us now," he said. "We've had fairly good weather in the last month or two, and we're back on track."
Also on schedule are plans to open ramps from a new Route 28 interchange providing access to the mall site, said Brad Miller, assistant construction engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Miller said the ramps will open prior to the opening of the mall.
New tenants announced yesterday include Forever 21, a young women's clothing chain that will be making its Pittsburgh area debut at Pittsburgh Mills, and Johnny Rockets, a casual dinner-themed restaurant.
Other retailers added to the tenant mix are American Eagle Outfitters, Victoria's Secret, New York & Co., Aeropostale, Rue 21, Charlotte Russe, Bath and Body Works, The Children's Place, Limited Too, Pacific Sunwear and Footlocker.
New restaurants are Marble Slab Creamery, Starbucks and Houlihan's.
Overall, more than 200 stores, restaurants and entertainment venues will be included at the $285 million, 340-acre Pittsburgh Mills complex.
In addition to the enclosed mall, the development includes 920,000 square feet of free-standing stores, banks and restaurants in a peripheral development known as the Village at Pittsburgh Mills.
Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Lowe's Home Improvement Center, a Springhill Suites hotel, PNC Bank and First Commonwealth Bank are among the tenants slated for the Village complex, along with restaurants Longhorn Steak House, Eat 'n Park and Steak n Shake.
Some of the Village stores may open this year, but others will not be completed until 2006, Costello said.
