It is almost certain that the ESPN "Gameday" crew will be at Heinz Field on Sept. 3 for Pitt's season-opener against Notre Dame. A Pitt spokesman said the deal is not yet finalized, but yesterday coach Dave Wannstedt made a reference to "Gameday" when talking about the 8 p.m. game against the Fighting Irish.

  • The status of backup quarterback Joe Flacco , who has asked for permission to transfer, remains unclear. Wannstedt is adamant he will not release Flacco from his scholarship.

"Whether he'll be with us when camp opens (Aug. 10), I don't know," Wannstedt said. "I don't want somebody around who is not committed to the program."

Wannstedt said true freshmen Bill Stull (Seton-LaSalle) and Shane Murray (Central Catholic) will battle for the No. 2 job in camp if Flacco is a no-show.

  • DVSport, a Pittsburgh-based firm, will provide the technology for the instant-replay systems in the Big East, Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference.

"Our package is an enhancement over the NFL (system)," said DVSport president Brian Lowe , a Mt. Lebanon native.

DVSport already supplies coaches scouting video in a digital format for Pitt and West Virginia, as well as Mt. Lebanon and Central Catholic high schools.

  • Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese has seen the list of the first 88 people who have agreed to vote in the new Harris poll as part of the BCS selection process. He declined to name names, but said the voters "have spent their whole lives in football, so I don't know how anybody can question the credibility of the poll. I would say there is more football expertise in the Harris poll than there is necessarily in the (Associated Press) poll."
