Senators Pick Up Contract Option on Goaltender Dominik Hasek
Hasek, a six-time winner of the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie, signed with Ottawa in July 2004 before the season was canceled by a labor dispute. He came out of retirement in 2003 to play with the Detroit Red Wings, but was limited to 14 games because of a groin injury.
The 40-year-old Hasek has a 296-192-82 record with 63 shutouts and a 2.33 goals-against average for Chicago, Buffalo and Detroit since the 1990-91 season. He ranks first in NHL history with a 92.4 save percentage.
Flyers sign first-rounders
The Philadelphia Flyers signed 2003 first-round draft choices Jeff Carter and Mike Richards to entry-level contracts, team officials announced yesterday.
Carter was the 11th overall pick in the 2003 draft by Philadelphia and Mike Richards went 24th. Both 20-year-old centers signed three-year deals. The Flyers also signed left wing Triston Grant and defenseman Alexandre Picard, general manager Bob Clarke announced.
Rangers sign Cuban goalie
The New York Rangers signed goaltender Al Montoya, their 2004 first-round draft pick who would be the first person of Cuban heritage to play in the NHL.
The 20-year-old Montoya played for the University of Michigan the past three seasons and was rated as the best North American goaltending prospect heading into last year's draft. Financial terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.
Montoya was 30-7-3 with a 2.52 goals-against average last year for Michigan. He also helped the U.S. win the gold medal at last year's World Junior Championship, where he was 6-0, including two shutouts, with a 1.33 goals-against average.
Stars to buy out Turgeon
The Dallas Stars released center Pierre Turgeon yesterday and plan to buy out his contract if no team claims him off waivers in 24 hours.
The buyout would be for $2.97 million, two-thirds what he was to make under the five-year, $25.5 million deal he signed before the 2001-02 season, team spokesman Jason Rademan said. The move will clear $4.5 million under the NHL's new salary cap for the Stars.
Panthers, Predators make deal
The Florida Panthers traded left wing Darcy Hordichuk to Nashville yesterday for the Predators' fourth-round pick in this weekend's NHL Draft.
Hordichuk had three goals, one assist and 158 penalty minutes in 57 games for the Panthers last season, before missing the final four games with a broken hand.
