Bicyclist hospitalized after being struck by car

A Japanese man is in intensive care at a Pittsburgh hospital after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a car early Wednesday afternoon along Route 30 in Hempfield Township.

State police at Greensburg said Daisuke Kobayashi, 22, of Marugame, Japan, was riding his Trek 8000 mountain bike along the westbound berm of Route 30 when he was hit by a 1987 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Debra Holland, 50, of Irwin, a half-mile east of North Greengate Road.

According to police, Holland was westbound on Route 30 when her car left the road and struck the guard rail. She continued to travel along the berm and struck Kobayashi from behind.

The victim was flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, police said. A hospital spokeswoman said there was no record of Kobayashi, but Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Joseph Musgrove said the man was being treated in the neurological intensive care unit for head injuries.

Police said Kobayashi was wearing a helmet.

Holland was taken to Excela Health Westmoreland Regional Hospital, in Greensburg, for treatment of minor injuries.
